Fitness can always be a hard aspect in our life to make time for, but can home training be the answer to that ? With so many programs out there how do you choose 'the one' that fits you best ? I am going to dive into the do's and don'ts of working out at home and how easy it is to implement this into your life.
Some become concerned with having no equipment at home, they believe that if there's no equipment there's no workout. In reality, there are so many body weight exercises and workouts that you can easily access. You can grab your dream body within weeks of starting ! Some become more motivated in a gym with equipment around them but in times like these we really don't have much of a choice. So, rather than giving up your workouts and progress you have made I am going to walk you through the pros and cons of working out at home and the best way to go about it.
Pros:
- Can be inexpensive (minimal equipment required)
- Saves time by eliminating travel to and from gym
- Easily accessible by using your phone, ipad or laptop
- No waiting around for classes or equipment - you can start whenever you want
- Can be cheaper than a normal gym membership
- You won't be bothered or possibly judged by strangers during your workout
Cons:
- Without a program in place you have to maintain your own motivation & interest
- No trainer or instructor to push you
- You might find you don't have enough or any space
- May want equipment that can be expensive
- Missing out on social side that gyms bring
Putting it into perspective can help you decide whether home training or for you and what you are really looking for in an online program.
What home equipment do I need to train at home ?
If you are someone who isn't into body weight workouts and loves to use equipment then you might be asking yourself, what do I actually need ?
Depending on your available budget you can create your own gym right in your backyard, garage, spare room or living room. There is a huge variety of equipment online that is easily accessible, the hardest part is deciding what you need and what not to buy. The following should provide you with some guidance on what you need for your specific training.

Basic equipment:
- Exercise mat
- Step
- Stability Ball
- Dumbbells
Advanced equipment:
- Free weights and dumbbells
- Squat racks
- Smith Machine (All in one machine with attachments)
- Barbells
- Cardiovascular equipment: treadmill, rower, cross trainer, stationary bike etc.
Whether you are looking to just get fit or create your own home gym it in entirely up to you.
So are home workout effective? In my opinion, yes ! Provided you are prepared to put aside a little time, effort, and can part with a bit of money (if you want equipment) it can be just as effective as driving to a gym and doing a workout. It will all depend on you and what you enjoy. Some prefer to have a trainer with them to motivate, correct form and push them beyond what they could push themselves. However, for others they have that motivation but just need help on what to do. If you are unsure you can always reach out to an online program you have been wanting to try and chat with them about options and what they offer. That way, you can see if that is the program for you and whether you are going to use it.
